Collective-iz presents: Black & Light incorporating 16mm and 8mm film, optical sound, live performance and digital projection, this programme will explore light’s vital role in film and how it is a point of departure and inspiration for many artist filmmakers.
Formed from reflected light the film image is affected by light at each stage of the film process, from storage, to shooting, to processing and finally the projection event itself.
Bringing together historical and contemporary filmmakers, each artist uses a different process and approach to interpret light, stripping away any veil and dissociation created by the apparatus of film and reveal to the viewer the intrinsic and primitive relationship that light has with film.
Showing works by:
Neil Henderson, Jamie Jenkinson and Shelley James, Marie Menken, Jennifer Nightingale, Cathy Rogers, Guy Sherwin and Lynn Loo, and a special re-staging of Matches by Annabel Nicolson - after two years of liaising with the artist, collective-iz have the honour to carry out this performance following her instructions.
collective-iz is comprised of four artist-filmmakers (Maria Anastassiou, Amy Dickson, Deniz Johns, Karolina Raczynski) that come together to program expanded cinema, sound and performance events in and outside London. Creating platforms for a range of technologies, from 16mm film projection and live video feed performances to para-cinematic works. These events are often one-night-only and reflect the ephemeral nature of performance and projection
This event is dedicated to A.L.Rees; our teacher, mentor and most devoted supporter of collective-iz.
Out of nowhere is a new film and performance series programmed by guest curators in association with no.w.here.
