For her screening at no.w.here artist Melanie Manchot has put together a specially conceived programme that brings together a selection of her recent films with reference material that inspired those works.
The screening will examine Manchot’s interest in the performative activation of public space through the gestures and situations enacted by her participants and directed towards her camera. The programme will start with some rare archive material – early film footage of street celebrations in the East End of London, which informed her 35mm film Celebration (Cyprus Street). The screening will also include the two companion works from her cycle of performative events: Walk (Square) and Dance (All Night, Paris), complemented by excerpt from moving image works that informed these pieces. The screening will conclude with Manchot’s recent video ‘Leap after The Great Ecstasy’ introduced by a short clip from Herzog’s ‘The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner’.
