Since 2004 Simon Payne has made a series of digital video works using a minimalist palette of primary and secondary colours and simple tones. The related patterns and editing strategies produce complex illusions of weaving motion, optical colour mixtures and phasing tone rows. Eschewing questions of depiction and representation pieces such as New Ratio (2007) and Vice Versa Et Cetera (2010) are concrete and assertive, but the direct nature of the work is irreconcilable with one’s experience of the complex perceptual phenomena that they produce.
Simon Payne’s work has been shown in numerous festivals and venues including: Anthology Film Archives; the Rotterdam International Film Festival; the European Media Arts Festival, Osnabrück; Pacific Film Archives, San Francisco; Media City, Windsor; the Edinburgh Film Festival; the Serpentine and Whitechapel Galleries; and Tate Modern. The programme of his work at no.w.here will include Black and White (2001) which verges on pure abstraction, through to his most recent videos to date, where bold colour fields and geometry have come to the fore.
