SOMETHING TO BE SCARED OF is the title of the second chapter of Julia Kristeva’s ‘Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection’ (1982), which considers the relationship between fear and language.

Fear precedes text, Kristeva writes, it is ‘proto-writing’, but is also the name given to expression that cannot be interpreted or sensibly codified in adult, proper, masculine language.

SOMETHING 3 BE SCARED OF is situated in the spaces between texts, bodies, desire, and fear. Keogh’s film skims over the interior of a dilapidated starship: various textures and surfaces glisten in the light of the camera as it’s lone inhabitant struggles to locate himself in time. The movement of zippers in Noonan-Ganley’s video work traces exposure and seclusion arising from the dresses and homoerotic drawings of the couturier Charles James. Stupart's 16mm film and performance refigures ecological disaster as traumatic event; sited on the skins of melting polar ice caps.
